I’m so excited to share this residential renovation project with you! Hanna & Aaron came to me more than a year ago planning a pretty major renovation to their heritage home in Vancouver’s South Granville area. Not knowing how to achieve a contemporary interior within such traditional architecture, they wanted to find their personal style while respecting the history of the house (I gave you a peek at the design here). Bingo!  Read more to see the before & afters…

Now, when we hear the word ‘heritage’ we’re often shot into a dream sequence of gorgeous thick moulding, patina’ed wood floors, and large windows with perfect detailing. In reality ‘heritage’ often comes with segmented floor plans, awkward door ways, and the aftermath of odd renovation work by previous owners. The latter was the case for Hanna & Aaron. The house had cramped rooms, a set of stairs that were nothing short of ankle snapping, and a complete lack of flow that just didn’t suit their lifestyle.  Here’s a look at look at the house before:

The Dining Room ‘before’ was completely isolated from other parts of the house.

This is one of the most extensive home renovations that I’ve ever been involved with.  The upper floor was completely removed and the main floor was taken back to it’s bare bones. Knock, knock. Who’s there? Opportunity!!  We could literally do anything with the space (within budget, reason and, building codes of course). We created a bright white interior with black accents for modern contrast with nods to the home’s classic origins and a few fun and quirky additions to suit this fun-loving family.  Here are the results:

I love this entry! Functional, fun, well-detailed and just plain cute.

The kitchen is a contemporary take on a classic all-white style. My favorite things here are those glass light fixtures and the built-in look of the cabinets

Their three year old son is completely into cars, truck and all classic boy things. We created a fun space for him full of what he loves but adaptable as he gets older.

We made use of a skylight in the main bathroom shower and kept the space classic and clean

Many thanks to Hanna & Aaron (and little Aidan too!) for being so fantastic to work with. They made a major commitment to change in this house and it paid off big time! I’m so proud of this project. Thanks also to Haymond and the team at Hercules Land Lt. who completely transformed this house.
